GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Abida Parveen is a rarity in the world of Sufi music, a female lead performer. She is the daughter of prominent Pakistani vocalist Ustad Ghulam Haider, who (somewhat bravely) ignored convention and allowed her to study under him, and she also accompanied him to various religious performances. After a time developing her abilities, she married Ustad Hussein Sheikh, an influential producer from Radio Pakistan, who also helped her to further her career. More time was spent in study, this time with the great Salamat Ali Khan. A number of albums, compilation appearances, and various world tours have followed, making her by far the most successful Sufi female performer, and one of the more notable performers of the form in general. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Abida Parveen embarked upon her professional career from Radio Pakistan, Hyderabad, in 1973. Her first hit was the Sindhi song “Tuhinje zulfan jay band kamand widha”. This song had been sung by many other Sindhi singers before her, but Abida brought her own unique style to it, rooted in classical music. Although she is associated most closely with the verses of the Sufi saint Shah Abdul Latif, she has also sung the verses of other Sufi saints, including Amir Khusrau, Bulleh Shah, Sachal Sarmast, Sultan Bahu, Shah Hussein, Pir Meher Ali Shah and others such as Kabir and Waris Shah. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
One can feel the passion coming out from Abida: In recent years, it has become fashionable to compare Abida with the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a giant of Sufi music who died in 1997. While such comparisons are necessarily subjective, there is certainly much that Abida has in common with Nusrat. Like him, she possesses a truly magnificent voice, is unassuming despite her superstar status, and her music is informed by a deep commitment to the ideals of Sufism. For both, the act of singing is a passionate offering to God, and for both the deepest part of their magic lies in the fact that they are able to bring the listener’s heart to resonate with the music, so deeply that we ourselves become full partners in that offering. However, despite all the comparisons, traditionalists regard Abida and Nusrat as belonging to different genres of Sufi music. |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Abida Parveen is regarded as a singer who has compromised neither the form nor content of her classical training while nevertheless retaining a compelling freshness that is endearing to a contemporary and often younger audience. Her singing has been compared to Umm Kulthum of Egypt and Afro-American Blues and Jazz singers like Nina Simone, Billie Holliday and Mahalia Jackson. While this comparison may have merit, it would be technically inaccurate to compare classically trained devotional singing to Jazz or Blues traditions. Where these two traditions do occasionally meet, however, is in the deep soul-searching, the melancholy that is sometimes expressed in anticipation of the divine release of the soul from its earthly torpidity and bondage. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
The only western style of singing remotely comparable to Abida's would be certain forms of sacred music, for example the Tallis Scholars. Sacred music, like sacred art, draws its inspiration and technical brilliance from years training at the feet of a musical director, spiritual Guru or Ustad in Urdu. Such training is incomplete without devotional homage to the teacher and an understanding of the ideals of transcendence as well as immanence in artistic expression. This training, under a good Ustad can take the shape of heightened awareness of the healing and spiritual properties of music, much like Nada Siddha, the inner sounds discovered through deep meditation and yoga under a competent Guru. . |

This training, under a good Ustad can take the shape of heightened awareness of the healing and spiritual properties of music, much like Nada Siddha, the inner sounds discovered through deep meditation and yoga under a competent Guru. Abida has repeatedly said that her singing has many healing effects on the listener, and in this sense Abida may be compared to the great North Indian musician, Tansen, whose music was said to have created spontaneous and miraculous effects on his listeners. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Abida is perhaps equally renowned as an accomplished Ghazal singer in Urdu and Sindhi. She has sung the ghazals of Mirza Ghalib and Faiz Ahmed Faiz to much acclaim within Pakistan and abroad. Abida is an exponent of Punjabi, Seraiki, Urdu and Sindhi Sufiana Kalam, which literally translates as the 'Sayings of the Sufis', comprising the poems and aphorisms of the great Sufis of the Indian sub-Continent. Sufiana Kalam is also closely aligned to Sikh Punjabi devotional singing, otherwise known as the "Shabad Kirtan tradition". . |

It is always interesting to witness, in times of heightened communal tensions in the Indian Sub-Continent, Abida's husky but equally delicate voice proclaiming a deeper bond of Universal Love that soars above the boundaries that divide religious and secular denominations. In this sense, her message can be compared to the likes of Kabir and Nanak, both of whom united Hindu and Muslim. Although it is generally accepted that the mystical aspect of Abida's musical message contains broad humanitarian appeal the appeal does not itself contain Sufism when considered from in its penultimate aim, the mystical union with God. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
So far we are aware that ABIDA Parveen was born in Larkana, Sindh, Pakistan in 1954. Her father, Ghulam Haider, was a music teacher and had his own music school. Sufi saints had deep influence on her family and she was brought up in the environment of mysticism, poetry and music of Sufis. Her father took notice of her talent and encouraged her to sing. Many renowned personalities of the music world trained her. Initially, she learnt music from her father and later from Ustad Salamat Ali Khan of Sham Chaurasia gharana fame. She also took training in Sufiana music from Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, who is a famous Sufi (mystic) saint of Sindh. Her career got some thrust after she married Ghulam Hussain Sheikh, who was a senior producer in Radio Pakistan. Abida Parveen is famous for her rich and melodious voice. She is recognised around the world for her ghazals, Sufiana kalaam and Punjabi folk. She performs with harmonium, tabla and dholak. She thinks if too many instruments accompany a song, the composition loses flavour. Her voice is different than other singers, which is perfect for touching the hearts of the audience. Her singing class is reflected by her fan following. Khazana is her most popular album, which features 8 ghazals. The background music comprises instruments like the sarangi, rabab, sarod, and Western keyboards. All ghazals are great but Le Chala Jaan Meri and Sauda Ho To Aisa Ho are two of the best ghazals of the album. Amrit Puri . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Abida Parveen has been gifted with perhaps one of the very greatest female voices of recent times for the proclamation of arguably one of the most important messages of our time. Abida has received many prestigious music awards for her singing, and is often invited to music festivals in Pakistan and abroad. Widely and professionally regarded as the "Singers' Singer" or the Artists' Artist, it is not surprising that her admirers include many of the very best singers of the sub-continent. Although she is not as well known as Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the West, Abida regularly tours the USA, Europe and the UK. . |

Singer: Abida Parveen Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib HAZARON KHWAHISHEIN AISEE: MP 3: (Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle)2 Thousands of desires, each worth dying for Bahot nikle mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle Many of them I have realized yet I yearn for more (Mahobbat mein nahin hai farq jeenay aur marnay ka)2 When in love, there is little difference between life and death (Usi ko dekh kar jeetay hain, jis kaafir pe dam nikle)2 We live by looking at the infidel for whom we are willing to die Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle Thousands of desires, each worth dying for (Daray kyon mera qaatil? kya rahega us ki gardan par?)2 Why should my killer (lover) be afraid? No one will hold her responsible (Voh khoon, jo chashm-e-tar se umr bhar yoon dam-ba-dam nikle)2 For the blood which will continuously flow through my eyes all my life Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle Thousands of desires, each worth dying for (Nikalna khuld se aadam ka soonte aaye hain lekin)2 We have heard about the dismissal of Adam from Heaven (Bahot be-aabru hokar tere kooche se hum nikle)2 With more humiliation, I am leaving the street on which you live Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle Thousands of desires, each worth dying for (Hui jin se tavaqqa khastagi ki daad paane ki)2 From whom I expected justice/praise for my weakness (Voh hum se bhi zyaada khasta e tegh e sitam nikle)2 Turned out to be more injured with the same cruel sword Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle Thousands of desires, each worth dying for (Kahaan maikhane ka darwaaza Ghalib aur kahaan vaaiz)2 The preacher and the bar's entrance are way apart (Par itna jaantay hain kal voh jaata tha ke hum nikle)2 Yet I saw him entering the bar as I was leaving! Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle Thousands of desires, each worth dying for Bahot nikle mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle Many of them I have realized yet I yearn for more Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dum nikle Thousands of desires, each worth dying for Trans: K Mehta Mehta Bhai has agreed that his translations are very poor, but we will go with it in hope that at future date we will have an improvement. I guess Abida did not sing one of the most beautiful verses of this ghazal, but others have done so. Here it is:
KHuda ke vaaste parda na kaabe se uthaa vaiz Kaheen aisa na ho yaaN bhi wohi kafir sanam nikle Trans: Oh Preacher! For God's sake do not lift the curtain off the Kaaba! What if some idols are still hidden underneath? Explanation: In the time of Abraham, there were no idols in the Kaaba, but later on some people installed idols there and worshipped them. Prophet Mohammed had all the idols removed. Ghalib's meaning is that many people are not truly what they seem to be, so prepare to be shocked if you look into their heart and find their true feelings. |

Singer: Abida Parveen Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib DIL HI TO HAI: MP 3 Heart it is, not a brick or stone Why shouldn't it feel the pain? Let none tyrannize this heart Or I shall cry again and again Neither the temple, nor the mosque Nor on someone's door or porch I await on the path where He will tread Why others should compel me to go? The illumined grace that lights up the heart And glows like the midday sun That Self that annihilates all sights When then it hides in the mysterious net? The amorous glance is the deadly dagger And the arrows of emotions are fatal Your image may be equally powerful Why should it appear before you? The rules of life and bonds of sorrow . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Singer: Abida Parveen Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib DIL HI TO HAI: MP 3 Dil hii to hai na sango khisht dard se bhar na aaye kyuun Heart it is, not a brick or stone why shouldn't it feel the pain? Roenge ham hazaar baar koii hamen sataaye kyuun Let none tyrannize this heart or I shall cry again and again Dair nahiin haram nahiin dar nahiin aastaan nahiin Neither the temple, nor the mosque nor on someone's door or porch Baithe hain rahaguzar pe ham gair hamen uthaaye kyuun I await the path where he will tread why others should compel me to go? Dil hii to hai na sango khisht dard se bhar na aaye kyuun Heart it is, not a brick or stone why shouldn't it feel the pain? Haan vo nahiin khudaa parast, jaao vo bevafaa sahii The illumined grace lights up the heart and glows like the midday sun Jisako ho diinodil aziiz, usakii galii men jaaye kyuun That Self annihilates all sights then it hides in the mysterious net? Dil hii to hai na sango khisht dard se bhar na aaye kyuun Heart it is, not a brick or stone why shouldn't it feel the pain? Qaide hayaato bande gam asl men donon ek hain The rules of life and bonds of sorrow in reality are the one manifestation Maut se pahale aadamii gam se najaat paaye kyuun Before realizing the ultimate truth how can then one attain liberation? Dil hii to hai na sango khisht dard se bhar na aaye kyuun Heart it is, not a brick or stone why shouldn't it feel the pain? Ghalib e khastaa ke bagair kaun se kaam band hain Without the wretched "Ghalib" has any activity come to a halt? Roiie zaarzaar kyaa, kiijie haaye haaye kyuun What then is the need to cry? what then is the need to brood? Dil hii to hai na sango khisht dard se bhar na aaye kyuun Heart it is, not a brick or stone why shouldn't it feel the pain? Roenge ham hazaar baar koii hamen sataaye kyuun Let none tyrannize this heart or I shall cry again and again Trans: |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Possible selection for our compilations: Album : Faiz By Abida Lyrics: Ahmad Faiz Faiz By Abda Parveen TIME LESS POETRY RENDERED SUBLIME 1. Gul Hui Jati Hai 2. Hun Ne Sub Sherher Main 3. Who Jis Ki Deed Main 4. Yeh Jafa-e- Gham Ka 5. Yumhe Nigah Mein 6. Sham- Firaq Audio CD Abida Parveen is considered by many as one of the greatest singers of the sufiana kalaam. Everything about the artist is noticeably different from her contemporaries. A loose full-sleeved kurta and shalwar with Sindhi ajrak chadar draped over her shoulder is the trademark dress of Abida Parveen. With no make-up on and very little adornment of any kind she comes of as a devoted and honest performer of her craft. Its this faithful devotion to the Sufis that brings about the kind of intensity that over powers the audience. Its a pleasant experience listening and watching her sing. Abida is clearly at her best with the Punjabi Sufi poetry of Bulle Shah and Waris Shah. Much like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan her awesome power to involve the listener in her state of passion lies in her voice. Be it Punjabi, Sindhi, Urdu or Saraiki, all lyrics are rendered with the same intensity having a captivating effect on the audience. The range of music in this collection guarantees to benefit the owner one-way or the other. One would appreciate the varying rhythm and sudden changes in intensity of Mendha ishq wee toon and Jhok ladae veen yaar deewana. An entire tape dedicated to the kalaam of Mian Mohammed Baksh and Pir Meher Ali Shah ensures that the listener enjoys the full range of Abidas talents. Clapping to the rhythmic beat of the ever popular Sakhi Lal Shahbaz and Ho Jamalo and savoring the lyrics of Keh Ghungroo Toot Gaye the owner would stand corrected in his or her decision to purchase the collection. . |

This is soo beautiful, I feel like I am in the company of Madam Abida, and lost in a trance.......such is the power of her magestical voice. Will get back to this one with some more indept translations: for instance the opening shayer can also literally means Aadmi Aadmi Say Milta Hai Even if one may easily meet other people, Dil Magar Kam Kisi Say Milta Hai It is difficult to find a soul-mate. . |

Yet another translattions for AADMI AADMI SE MILTA HAI: aadmii aadmii se miltaa hai dil magar kam kisii se miltaa hai A person meets another person but the heart does not find everyone pleasant. bhuul jaataa huuN maiN sitam us ke vo kuchh is saadgii se miltaa hai I forget his injustice [to me] [when] he meets with such simplicity. aaj kyaa baat hai ke phuuloN kaa rang terii haNsii se miltaa hai What is it today that the flowers’ color matches your laughter? mil kar bhii jo kabhii nahiiN miltaa TuuT kar dil usii se miltaa hai One who is difficult to reach even after trying [my] heart passionately loves him only. kaar-o-baar-e-jahaaN saNvarate haiN hosh jab be-Khudii se milataa hai Worldly matters are resolved when consciousness meets unconsciousness. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
GHAZALS OF HEER BY ABIDA PARVEEN: Heer Ranjha is one of the four popular tragic romances of the Punjab and Sindh. The other three are Mirza Sahiba, Sassi Punnun and Sohni Mahiwal. There are several poetic narrations of the story, the most famous being 'Heer' by Waris Shah written in 1766. It tells the story of the love of Heer and her lover Ranjha. Well-known poetic narrations have also been written by Damodar Das Arora, Mukbaz and Ahmed Gujjar, among others. If one is really engrossed in the story then the renditions of the Ghazals by Abida Parveen can actually cause tears for the tragedy of Heer Ranjha: Since we are featuring Abida, thought it best to include these, amongs't her memorable work of ghazals. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Raqs-E-Bismil ("Dance of the Wounded") holds a special significance in Parveen's career. Firstly, a release through the major record label from India confirmed wider reach in the Indian subcontinent as opposed to earlier, haphazardly released albums. Secondly, rather than dedicating an album to one particular poet; as Parveen had done quite frequently earlier; Raqs-E-Bismil witnesses Parveen singing to the poetry of various poets. With three songs on the word by Hazarat Shah Niaz and one each by poets Asghar Gondvi ("Zaahid Ne"), Maulana Hasrat Mohani ("Roshan Jamal-E-Yaar"), Hazrat Zaheen Shah Taaji ("Ji Chahe"), and Jigar Moradbadi ("Jalwa Ba Qadra"), Parveen makes sure to pick her favorite poetry for this album. More importantly, due to the seemingly important stature of this release, she sticks to the Kafi genre of singing without straying to other extremes and thus brings out an album that displays her at her very best. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Raqs-e-Bismil by Saman Zobayr Abida Parveen displays her magic once more, this time under Muzaffar Ali's baton. A film-maker, a poet, an artist, a music-lover, Muzaffar Ali with his lilting and soul touching compositions and Abida Parveen with her power-packed voice come together to give melody and voice to ghazals chosen celestially from myriad poets. The album Raqs-e-Bismil (Dance of the Wounded), inspired by the couplets of Rumi is a collection of Sufi ghazals sung in the haunting voice of Abida Parveen. Brilliant poets such as Hazrat Shah Niaz, Asghar Gondvi, Hasrat Mohani, Hazrat Zaheen Shah Taaji, and Jigar Moradabadi wrote these magical ghazals. This presentation from Music Today is indeed for the connoisseur. continues....... . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Raqs-e-Bismil by Saman Zobayr Today, Abida Parveen is the most famous exponent of Urdu ghazals, Punjabi kafees and regional folk songs. Her voice with its sheer strength and depth transports listeners into a world of spiritual ecstasy. Because of her choice of repertoire, many people tend to describe her as a successor to the late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. But she's different on two counts – she has a presentation style of her own, and she doesn't involve herself in experimentation and crossover ventures. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Raqs-e-Bismil by Saman Zobayr The background music in Raqs-e-Bismil, which makes adroit use of both South Asian instruments such as sarangi, rabab, sarod, and western keyboards, is truly awesome and lifts the album above the level of the ordinary and worldly. You see the power of skilful repetition of musical phrases in the background score of the ghazal Roshan jamaal- e- yaar. Abida Parveen sings with unflinching involvement. Like Begum Akhtar who would create an entire Lucknow with one couplet, Parveen creates a unique atmosphere of devotion with every line she chants. In the ghazal Ishq mein tere, her voice soars with spiritual zeal and reveals her expertise in classical music. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Raqs-e-Bismil by Saman Zobayr The idiom of these ghazals is also the expression of highest love-poetry. There is no questioning that the merit of this poetry drips with beauty. The inlay cover of this CD provides not only the lyrics, but also their English translations of Urdu ghazals. Almost every couplet is a gem; take the first ghazal - Yaar ko humne ja ba ja dekha, kahin zaahir kahin chhupa dekha by Hazrat Shah Niaz. Or the couplet from Ishq mein tere, which is - Aql ke madrase se uth, ishq ke maikade mein aa/ Jaam e fanaa o bekhudi, ab to piya jo ho so ho. Again listen to the one by Jigar Moradabadi, Jalwa ba qadre zarf e nazar dekhte rahe / Kya dekhte ham unko, magar dekhte rahe. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN: Raqs-e-Bismil by Saman Zobayr In this music of love and undiluted ecstasy, there is also a terrible, almost palpable sadness that makes one want to cry. Is it because surrender means giving up something you have held on to dearly? Can there be a completely happy surrender? Will there always be a bleeding point of pain in it? In any case, the compelling nature of this music cannot be negated. This is a must-listen for any music lover, to savor the taste of Sufi music. . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
IN THE REALMS OF HAPPINESS Abida Parveen gives a peek in to her mind. Photo: V.V. Krishnan Traffic jams are nothing new in New Delhi. Honking cars, smoke in the air, and irate pedestrians. This jam was different though. People did not seem to be losing their temper as much. It seemed okay to wait a while. A surprised resident of the Humayun's Tomb area asked a policeman about the untimely rush that was not allowing him to park his car in front of his own house at 11.30 p.m. The rush, as also the magic, was all thanks to Abida Parveen. Her appearances at Jahan-e-Khusrau, the annual festival organised by Delhi Tourism along with the Rumi Foundation, are a regular feature in the Capital now, but that does not dim the anticipation. And the Sufi singer from Pakistan, beloved of Indians, never disappoints. "I enjoyed singing before the Delhi crowd," she smiles. It is a smile full of spontaneous joy. Whereas often her half-closed eyes, the down-turned face, the strands of hair that fall unbidden and unnoticed across it, give the impression of someone completely lost in the realms of thought, she is simultaneously aware of the world around her. As usual the festival offered a platform to a spectrum of performers. If there was the Rumi group from Turkey, the list also included pop king Daler Mehndi, whose name came as a surprise to some. "It is the right of every artiste to study the kalam bequeathed to us by the veterans of the faith (buzurgaan-e-din). And an artiste should not be known by just one kalam, nor just one type of music. Daler Mehndi presented some very good verses." Abida's name is inextricable from the Jahan-e-Khusrau festival. "It is a place one always learns something new. And whenever I come, I attempt to present something new and different." This time one of her most popular presentations was the verse "Jin nayanan mein nayan". It came to her in an unexpected way. "You don't watch television?" She seems surprised. "Surely you must watch `Antakshari'! Once when I was watching `Antakshari', the host - he sings very well - sang this sher. I found it so beautiful, I called him up from Islamabad. I told him, `Aap ne to quayamat dhaadi!' He gave me the complete verse." `A radiation' Once a kalam takes hold of you, says the singer, whose throat often catches with emotion as she speaks of the subject that has enveloped her being, it does not take leave of you. The sufi kalam is "a visual in itself," she explains. People take from it what is appropriate for them. "Sufi music includes classical music as well as dohas and such. We take the doha, find its essence and set it to music. It is not the work of a day. I am immersed in it always." She may see her art as a form of devotion, but audiences are of all types. "Apne aap mein alau jalana padta hai. (The flame must burn within the heart.) Only He can make it happen. We try to reach His doorstep. And consider the audience as the manifestation of Khuda." Everyone however may not have such unsullied faith. "Even if one or two understand, it is okay. When I perform in Western countries, they hear and they cry. They are not Indians and Pakistanis to understand the words. Sufi music, sufi kalam, makes itself understood by the heart. It is a radiation." Set to go on a tour of Europe this June, the veteran has just released Ruh-e-Ali, her latest album of Sufi compositions by Muzaffar Ali. The musical approach is different from other albums so far. "The verses of the veterans of the faith have their own inexplicable attraction. They are present when you sing them. The whole point is to lessen sorrow in the world." . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Singer: Abida Parveen Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib Music : Muzaffar Ali 7) DIL HI TO HAI: MP 3 Thought I would send in a couple of improvements. Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain? Royenge ham hazaar baar, koii hamen sataaye kyuun I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me? Dair nahiin haram nahiin dar nahiin aastaan nahiin There is no place for me, no mosque, temple, nor a doorway or shrine Baithe hain rahaguzar pe ham ghair hamen uthaaye kyuun so I sit and wait for her by the roadside, why should anyone rouse me?? Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain? Royenge ham hazaar baar koii hamen sataaye kyuun I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me? Haan vo nahiin khudaa parast, jaao vo bevafaa sahii Yes, she is not pious, granted she is unfaithful Jisako ho diin-o-dil aziiz, usakii galii men jaaye kyuun Those who hold their religion and their hearts dear should stay away from her Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain? Royenge ham hazaar baar koii hamen sataaye kyuun I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me? Qaid-e-hayaat-o-band-e-gham asl men donon ek hain imprisoned in life, or bound in sorrow, it is really the same thing Maut se pahale aadamii gham se najaat paaye kyuun how can you be free from sorrow before you leave this life? Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain? Royenge ham hazaar baar koii hamen sataaye kyuun I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me? Ghalib e khasta ke baghair kaun se kaam band hain Without the wretched "Ghalib" has anything been stopped? Roiye zaar zaar kyaa, kiijiye haaye haaye kyuun What then is the need to cry? why beat your chest in lament? Dil hii to hai na sang-o-khisht, dard se bhar na aaye kyuun It is just a heart, not stone or brick, why would it not feel the pain? Royenge ham hazaar baar, koii hamen sataaye kyuun I shall cry a thousand times, why should anyone tease me? This is soo beautiful, I feel like I am in the company of Madam Abida, and lost in a trance.......such is the power of her magestical voice. Singer: Abida Parveen Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib 10) HUSN GAMZE KI KASHAKASH SE: This is a rarely heard but beautiful and touching poem by Ghalib. Mirza ji is saying that no one can love as deeply as he could, and the future of Love itself is in jeopardy after his death. The helplessness of love brings tears kisake ghar jaayegaa sailaab-e-balaa mere baad where will this flood of misfortune go, after me? Trans: Venkat . |

GHAZAL EXTRAORDINAIRE: ABIDA PARVEEN:
Thirteen more selections to go, before we bring this to a close.........but before doing so we will also look at some of the other Ghazals which also contributed to make Abida Parveen such an interesting artiste.......it is said that Ustad Nusrat Ali Khan has passed away but Abidaji is quickly filling that void. Her mannerism of body movements replicated that of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. . . |
