kidmost, that would be a miracle should it happen. Have you heard from the great Ashoka yet?

Jansher, I know you have been calling for commemorative stamps and I think that next year would be ideal for such a stamp. But then the PPP might procrastinate giving their usual excuse - "Oh what will the Afros think"... so lets wait and see.

When did that lady wants the piece for her Journal? I was thinking of going back to the essay on that you sent to me a while back which I already started to work on.

Exacly, it will be published in 2008 for the 170th anniv.

We need to pen a letter again about the stamp issue.

Jansher, it is too early to pen a letter, but I have a few things that I would like to tabled for the Minister of Culture regarding the commemoration of the 170th anniversary celebrations (that is if they intent to have one on a scale that would be fitting to honor the first Indians that set foot on the soil of British Guiana 170 years ago).

Kidmost, like King Ashoka got several horns that he blowing at the same time. I think he meant the next Monday (but two years from the date that he contacted you). So hold your breath bai.

Some commemorative stamps

Upon Independence in May 1966, Guyana issued its first set of postage stamps along with the existing 1954 British Guiana stamps overprinted with the words "GUYANA INDEPENDENCE 1966". The postage stamps of Guyana during its first forty years as an independent country can be divided into three distinct periods: May 1966 to early 1981, when the vast majority of stamps portrayed our history, society and culture; mid-1981 to late 1989, when the post office printed few new stamps and resorted to overprinting and surcharging earlier issues; and late 1989 to the present, when many new stamps were issued, with relatively little of Guyana highlighted.

writing a letter to the press wouldn't make a difference. Just like last year, I am sure that the GOG gonna run and get some second-rate singers and dancers from India to perform for the 170th anniversary when Guyana (both inside and outside) have their own share of accomplished [Guyanese] artistes to do justice to our heritage instead of bringing Indians from India - who always turn around and make denigrading remarks about Indo-Guyanese who have lost their real culture etc. etc.....

We can wait forever for a stamp. Many think that having melas and dancing up is the beginning and end of Indian History in Guyana. There needs to be the building of institutions to preserve the history and culture of Indians in Guyana.
