On my paternal side, our name Cheekhoree comes from the Indian State of Bihar. The name has been bastardized several times from Cheekhoree. Today it is spelled, Chickerie. However, we were aware of the original name since we were in possession of my grandfather's national Id and birth certificate. Through oral history, we knew that he came from Bihar and from the Ahir (caste). His immigration record confirms this oral history. My great grandfather Kalsingh Cheekhoree, ahir (caste) migrated to Guyana from Karagahar in the district of Shahabab, Bihar in 1891 on board the SS Sheila. He was indentured to plantation Rose Hall. Bhojpuri was his mother tongue. His father name was Mohit. At age 20 he came to Guyana. Cheekhoree was born in 1871 in Shahabad, Bihar, India. Today i hold the most precious connection to India, his immigration certificate which is in impeccable condition. Am third generation born outside of India from the Cheekhoree clan.

Its here at Buxar where he was registered to go to Guyana

My great grandfather came to Guyana in 1891 on the ship SS Sheila at age 20 from Shahabad, Bihar and was indentured to PLN Rosehall.

This is a copy of his Immigration Pass which has been autenticated by the Guyana Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Jansher:
I commend you on your recent accomplishment. Keep up the good work.
I had raised a few questions in an earlier post but got no response. I thought I should try my luck again.

1. Are the Indentureship records in Calcutta from where many of the immigrants departed?
2. Are any of these records in England?
3. Are the records at the Guyana archives on the internet? I guess not but I would like to confirm.

Best wishes.

Fred

and you forget to add that

1) Evans Persaud has been collecting money from people to search for their records (making profits from folks searching for their roots) when the intent of IDP was to make available the records online for all to search.

2) that Mr. Singh and company is planning to seek the help of your two Surinamese counterparts to help with their IDP project (after they "hi-jack IDP project document that was submitted to the government).

3) ....

the nerve of some Guyanese when they know fully well that all the proposals were what you came up with based on your discussions with the Surinamese.

like you eye pass me nah!

let dem moutar put their money where their mouth is.

In retrospect you should have gone to the press with all the BS that has been going on, but you listen to Gail and what did she came up with nada, she gave her word and then she turn to be an "Indian giver".... knowing fully well that she was going to leave the Ministry of Culture to take up Ministry of Home Affairs position.

At least you have been vindicated, since it has been made public that Evans Persaud and company were the ones looking to make a profit off of the Indians.

I wish whoever it is that wants to "save" the records luck (but it look like they are all in it for the money).

oh that assh... he is just a hater who kept telling me that the name cheekhoree was tamil/madrasi.

RQ, only the chickeries from bush lot, corentyne are related. There were a few other cheekhoores who came to guyana from India. But you never know. I find a few in Mauritius as well. How is your research coming along?

Jansher, it would be so embarrassing for Mr. Singh when he arrange to meet with your Surinamese counterparts -- saying himself - what is wrong with dese Indo-Guyanese people they can't seem to get their act together, when they know fully well your role in highlighting the plight of the deteriorating records.

i will have my neice scan it tomrrow and put it on line. Yes, i will frame it and do not want anyone to question is autenticity. You can do the same. I had the women from the archive stamp and sign it, then took it to the Ministry of F.Affairs to validate it since it will be use to obtain PIO status.

Not sure about writing over the pic. Never did it before. Someone on this forum should be smrt in hi-tech to advise you. I thought yu need a legal advisor for copywrite. Check on this.
If your docs are fm GY, have a GY lawyer do it.
Whatever the country, own legality is safer.

My great grandfather came from the district of Shahabad in Bihar, which beame Bhojpur and from 1972 another district was carved from it, Rohtas.

Shahabad District
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Shahabad, with headquarters at Arrah was one of the districts of Bihar, India. The district was subsequently bifurcated into a number of districts. Kunwar Singh belonged to this district. This district is often known as Bhojpur and since 1972 the district of Rohtas has been carved out of district. There also used to be a lot of tigers here but most have now been shot for sport. When the ban of shooting tigers came in 1972-3 everyone gave up. But soon poachers came, mainly untouchables who needed money. Today tigers are decently protected.
