Folks:
This is my first posting on this forum so please tolerate my inexperience and ignorance. I have found the postings on indentureship and family ancestry interesting and informative, particularly of the Nisbets and Najeers. I commend the persons who did the research; keep up the good work. I recornized some of the names. Actually, some of the Nisbets and Najeers are my wife's relations. For example, Batoolan Kadir, who was married to Mohamed Haniff Najeer, was the older sister of my mother-in-law, Sakina; and Sonny Nisbet was married to Hamidan Mohamed who was the sister of my father-in-law, Ali Mohamed. The Mohameds are from Leonora where I met my wife and lived for seven years. In one of the postings (I think by Jansher), the name Munshiji from Bush Lot Corentyne was mentioned. I remembered that guy because I am from Bush Lot Farm. I may know the parents of "Jansher". I am interested in tracing my paternal ancestry. My grandfather was from India (Uttar Pradesh/Bihar?). His name was Jumrattie. This is not a lot to go by. Any suggestions/guidance?

Fred send me every thing you know about your family; the oldest, date and place of birth and i will do some work for you. We are trying to bring awareness about our roots.

Najeers= nazir, but in eastern UP they pronounce it like najeer, like jaitoon instead of zaitoon.

Jansher: Thanks for responding and for offering to help. The only thing I have about my ancestors on my father's side is my grandfather's name, Jumrattie. Of course, I have more information about my father. I am trying to gather some more information from my aunts in Canada. As soon as I accumulate a significant amount of information, I will send it to you. In the meantime, however, I am interested in tracing the ancestry of my father-in-law, Ali Mohamed. He was born in Leonora, Guyana on January 3, 1916. His father was Dost Mohamed (DOB is unavailable) who was born in Guyana; and his mother is Dooknee (?). I guess she was born in Guyana; her date of birth is unavailable. Thanks for checking. By the way, are you from Bush Lot Corentyne? If so, I may know your parents or grandparents. Best wishes.

Dost had 2 sons, I believe the names were Alim and Shafeek. Alim was the eldest, Shafeek will be about 40-45 now.

yes, my root is at Bush lot, corentyne, berbice. My father is Esar Chickerie.

Am going to guyana next week.

The oldest person in the family that you know-names, place and date of birth and from their bith records you can extract other relevant information. Keep me posted.

BK and Amral: That is not the Dost Mohamed to whom I referred. The Dost Mohamed that I am tracing lived in Leonora estate; he had a big shop obliquely opposite Cho Yee. He had three sons from his first marriage, my father-in-law, Ali Mohamed, being one of them. From his second marriage he had three daughters and five sons. Some of these eleven children are still alive.

Jansher: I suspected that you are Esar's son. As I mentioned before, I am from Bush Lot Farm so I know your Dad very well. Actually, my mother looked after your Dad when he was small. My mother was Aunty Pheej (Pheej Nanee); she passed away in 2001. I am almost sure you will remember her. Raymond did; I used to communicate with Raymond, your brother. Two of my sisters are still living at the house in Farm so you can visit them when you go to Guyana. You may not know me because I left Farm in 1965 and never returned for any considerable period of time except for brief vacations. My official name is Emamuddin but people in the village called me Mamuddin, Mampo, Dice, or Mampo Dice. You can ask your Dad about me. Of course I remembered Ayube, who used to be the Imam at Kildonan. I attended the Mosque there. I am going to get some information about my Dad and then we can proceed from there. I will stay in touch. Best wishes.

I know that family also, when we moved into the estate I believe one of the old man's son or a daughter took over the shop. Later they got a houselot at Parafield - I believe it was the Middle Street the first house(the most beautiful house built at that time in Leonora) at the corner of Cow Dam Street.

Incidentally Raymond is Jansher.

BK: You are correct. Dost Mohamed's son, Jack, took over the shop then he moved to Parafield, just off Cow Dam. Jack has died and his family has moved to NY. Are you from the Leonora area? I had a feeling that Jansher and Raymond were one and the same person. Best wishes.

Sakina is an uncommon name. Does/did the Sakina you know live/lived on the Essequibo Coast?

Hello to all members!
I am new to your site. Previously, I browsed thru and picked up on few threads regarding the
Leonora info shared. I am fm Leonora & have been researching my family history n collecting
pertinent details fm family members & others.
I wondered if there are any individuals who do the researches in GY for a fee? Or do I have to go to GPO/Archives to get my parents & g/parents BC to verify the details in regards to their indenturship???
My ajaa came in 1872 and ajee in 1886. This is stated on my dad bc with the BR numbers. Does this BR indicate that they were born in Guyana and not immigrants?? Need some clarity.
On the Leonora issue, Jack was married to my cousin Champa who is in Queens, NY. Just met her in June, goes by the name of Mrs.Mohamad.
Across the shop over the road., ist logee my ajee lived and I lived further down the road until we moved to Seafield. Do know some Leonora folks. So long for now!

Demerara Guy: The Sakina to whom I referred was born in Anna Catherina but married Ali Mohamed from Leonora and lived there a long time before she migrated to Canada. She passed away a few years ago.

Jansher: I know most of the people from Kildonan and Maida. Mursaleen was married to the older sister of my mother; therefore, Ali (Puna)who was married to Baba (Manager's daughter) was my cousin. Some of the relatives are in NY. Tailor from Maida was married to my cousin, Baby, (Puna's sister). Tailor passed away recently. Billy was Tailor's son; he is in NY. I have not seen that guy in ages. I remember soldier as well; he was Tailor's brother. As a little boy I, as well as other children, used to be scared to go to Maida because people used to say that "Dutchman" existed there. I hope you have a safe trip to Guyana. Please extend my best wishes to all. When you return I hope to have some information for you. Best wishes.

RQ: Jack was my father-in-law's half brother: same father, different mothers. I am not originally from Leonora; I am from the Corentyne but lived in Leonora for seven years. I taught at Leonora Primary school between 1966 and 1973. Perhaps I taught you in school. My wife is from Leonora. You have some information which will be helpful to trace your ancestry. I am sure one of the guys who contributes regularly to this forum will provide some guidance. I am new to this business. I know that there are records in the archives in Guyana and the Government has been trying to organize and preserve these records. I am pretty sure that some records have been lost or damaged. Keep on trying.
